Thomson Reuters Releases 2014 Latest SCI Magazine Impact Factor

On July 30th, Beijing time, the much-watched Thomson Reuters "SCI Journal Citation Reports" was released. The report covers 10,927 journals in 237 major categories in 82 countries. Published this year is the impact factor of these magazines in 2013. This year, 379 new journals were added, and 33 journals were also excluded because of their high self-introduction rate.

Impact factor is an important tool for quantitative evaluation of journals. Since 1975, the American Institute of Scientific Information has published a citation report of the journals it has collected in the previous year, ranking the journals according to the frequency and impact of citations. Journal impact factors are also used by some research institutions for their important benchmarking significance as one of the indicators for scientific evaluation.

The three leading magazine influence factors are: Nature (42.315, compared to last year), Cell (33.116, compared to last year), and Science (31.447, compared to last year).

In all the magazines listed, 56% of the magazine's impact factors have improved, while the other 44% of the magazine's impact factors have shown a downward trend.

In 2013, there were only 3 magazines with more than 500 citations in all magazines, which were Nature, PNAS and Science.

Among medical journals, the first in medical category is Ca-Cancer J Clin, with an impact factor of 162.500, 153.459 in 2012, the second is NEJM, the impact factor is 54.420, and in 2012 it was 51.658. CHEM REV magazine rose. To the third place, replacing NAT REV GENET, a journal of Nature Press last year, had an impact factor of 45.661, while the influence factor of Nat Rev Genet magazine dropped to 39.794 and in 2012 it was 41.063.

The changes in the impact factors of the three major journals of CNS have also received much attention from the outside world. In 2013, the impact factors of the three magazines all increased. Among them, the influence factor of Nature magazine was 42.351, which was higher than the 38.597 announced in 2013. The ranking also increased significantly, ranking fifth in the total impact factor. The influence factors of Cell and Science magazine also increased, which were 33.116 and 31.477 respectively. Cell magazine ranked 16th this year, followed by Science, ranked 17th.

The impact factor is, to a certain extent, one of the quality standards of a magazine, and can bring too much beyond science: faculty, fund applications, academic influence, etc. Although many scholars have criticized the influence factors of magazines, they are still the fans of top magazines when they publish their papers.
