Nanomedical methods improve the therapeutic effect of HIV drugs

Release date: 2016-10-27

Recently, researchers at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom have used nanotechnology to invent a new way to administer anti-HIV drugs, which can significantly improve the absorption of drugs and improve the therapeutic effect.

The study was led by pharmacologist Professor Andrew Owen and material chemist Steve Rannard , who improved the treatment of HIV by this method of administering nanotechnology .

Nanotechnology is a technology that transforms things at the atomic, molecular, and supramolecular layers. Nanomedicine is the application of nanotechnology in the prevention and treatment of diseases.

At present, the treatment of HIV requires patients to take oral anti- HIV drugs daily. This method of administration has a big problem, that is, the dose of oral drugs is large to reach an effective therapeutic concentration, and the excessive dose causes many complications. Therefore, the patient's compliance is not good.

Researchers have invented a new oral drug that uses Solid Drug Nanoparticle ( SDN ) technology, which increases body absorption, reduces drug dosage and drug costs, and reduces patient burden. Physical and economic burden.

Currently, there are no oral nanotherapeutics for the treatment of HIV patients. Traditional childhood HIV treatments are also not widely used. The researchers analyzed the drugs currently used to treat children with HIV , which uses high concentrations of ethanol to dissolve lopinavir (a drug used to treat HIV ), which is poorly soluble.

Subsequently, the researchers used a newly developed method to obtain an improved water as a solvent. This solvent has good solubility for lopinavir, and it is no longer necessary to add ethanol to help dissolve. The body absorbs the improved solvent-dissolved drug more well.

Professor Owen said: "The benefits of our interdisciplinary research are beginning to emerge. The way we dissolve the drug in our invention overcomes the current common challenge of antiretroviral treatment, and that is how to improve the drug in the body. The effective concentration in the diet, as well as for children with HIV, is in urgent need of improved drugs to meet clinical needs."
