The principle of near-infrared imaging is to irradiate the region of interest of the brain with a certain wavelength of near-infrared light, and measure the intensity change after passing through the brain tissue through the detector. Since the light transmittance of the tissue depends on the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream, the increase in oxygenated blood flows to the activated area because of brain activity. The imaging principle of fMRI is also based on the mechanism of measuring neurovascular coupling, except that the technology used by NIRS is cheaper and smaller. In addition, electromagnetic interference or muscle contraction does not interfere with near-infrared data collection, so NIRS is an ideal method to monitor brain activity under real conditions.
Recently, Jens Steinbrink of the Bernstein Center for Neurological Technology (BFNT-B) in Berlin, Germany, and Professor Klaus-Robert Mülle of the Technical University of Berlin, together with researchers from NIRX, conducted an experiment to measure brain function in real motion. . The portable NIR brain function instrument used in the experiment replaces the bulky fiber with a very small transmitter and detector, which can be measured directly on the head; control and record data by a laptop placed in a backpack .
Previous studies have confirmed that the portable NIRS system can perform brain function analysis under real conditions. Participants recruited in the study rode bicycles along the Spree River in Berlin. The experiment found that even under very noisy conditions, it is still possible to reliably extract control signals from the central motion of the contralateral motion of the brain.
