For every country, medical management policies are a complex issue, and a slight carelessness can have serious consequences.

A recent study showed that a decision issued by the National Institute of Clinical Medicine in 2008 may prove to be a mistake. In 2008, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence recommended discontinuing the administration of antibiotics to patients undergoing invasive dental treatment.

Previously, dentists generally prescribed appropriate amounts of antibiotics to reduce the risk of infective endocarditis. After several years, according to a survey of researchers, the amount of such prescriptions has been reduced by about 80%. However, in the UK, the number of cases of infection has increased by 35 per month. Although the researchers believe that the direct cause of this phenomenon may not necessarily be directly related to this measure of NICE, this figure is enough to attract the attention of NICE.

In this study, the researchers pointed out that in 2004-2008, in order to prevent this disease, doctors issued an average of 10,600 antibiotic prescriptions per month; from 2008 to 2013, this number was only 2,206. In the same period, the number of infected cases increased significantly. NICE officials said they have begun to verify the results and will make changes immediately if necessary. But NICE also stressed that all hospitals and doctors must still strictly adhere to existing guidelines before NICE gets the exact data and makes the final decision.

Infective endocarditis is a rare heart tissue infection that is located in the heart tissue of the patient's heart, which also makes it difficult for the body's immune system to eliminate pathogens at this location. The mortality rate of patients with this disease is around 50%. At present, antibiotic prescriptions are used as a standard measure to prevent the risk of infective endocarditis in dental surgery, both in the European Union and in the clinical guidelines given by the relevant medical administrations in the United States. A British researcher said that the main problem now is how to prove that there is a direct relationship between the NICE guidelines and the rise in infection. He believes that the relevant institutions need to quickly organize a large-scale clinical study to analyze the problem.
