A Japanese company has developed an algorithm that infers human emotions through brain waves, which is favored.

In the first fatal traffic accident in Tesla, Tesla once said that he was not wrong. He has clearly stated that his autopilot function is still immature. The driver still needs to be highly vigilant when using it. It is the driver. It’s too big.

For this reason, some people refute and others accept it. Those who accept accept that, after all, technology is not wrong, and new technologies need to go through some tests. The person who dismissed the opinion felt that you simply explained that the driver could not leave the steering wheel with both hands, but did not achieve actual supervision. After all, human beings are not machines, and it is human nature to be distracted. How to supervise the driver's behavior is indeed a problem.

Little Software, a startup in Japan that develops algorithms that infer human emotions through brain waves, has recently received widespread attention in the automotive industry. Little Software has developed an algorithm that divides the emotions at the time of driving into six types based on data measured by commercially available brainwave sensors. These emotions are “calm”, “sleepy”, “fear”, “anxiety”, “comfort” and “fatigue”. Little Software has 56 emotion speculation algorithms, the six of which are the main emotions in the car driving process.

Brainwave research has been more than a hundred years, but in addition to some medical applications, such as helping the deaf to move their limbs, has been in the research stage. To measure a person's emotions in real time, the person being measured needs to wear a brainwave sensor. Little Software uses a brainwave sensor manufactured by NeuroSky Inc. of the United States to conduct research, and the data collected by the brainwave sensor is wirelessly transmitted to the smartphone. After monitoring the driver's emotions, the system will adjust the car according to its emotional state. For example, if the driver is anxious, he can play music that helps to ease the emotions. If the driver is tired, he can switch to "Automatic driving mode".

However, it is a problem to want the driver to wear the sensor all the time just as it keeps a high level of concentration. Therefore, Little Software is currently working on a technology that uses brain sensors instead of brainwave sensors to predict emotions. This technique can compare the emotional outcomes estimated by brain waves with those of other on-board sensors. For example, the direction of the line of sight measured by the in-vehicle camera, the expression, the body motion of the driver using a pressure sensor, and the like are associated with six emotions based on the brain wave sensor. If it is possible to ascertain the relationship between the driver's line of sight, expression, and the like and the emotion measured by the brain wave, the driver's emotion can be estimated in real time without using the brain wave sensor.

The emotion estimation algorithm using brain waves is also expected to be used in the design and development stage of automobiles. For example, when determining the interior design, you can choose a "comfortable" solution from multiple scenarios. It is also possible to design shock absorbers and suspension springs that improve ride comfort when designing suspensions.

Little Software was founded three years ago, but currently has only five employees. One of the company's founders and CTO Kawahara Duff said that most of the Japanese automakers have extended an olive branch to it. The company seems to be conducting joint research with several of them.

According to the industry, driverless driving will not be realized until after 2020. During this period, the autopilot function is only an aid. The driver is still the main driver and decision maker before the unmanned drive. It is foreseeable that there will be more companies in the future that monitor drivers' emotions or behaviors like Little Software.
