Myofascial relaxation treatment can effectively improve the quality of life of patients with mechanical neck pain

Release date: 2016-08-24

Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder, and it is estimated that 70% of individuals experience neck pain more or less in their lifetime. At present, there are many physical treatments that can be used for the treatment of neck pain, including manual therapy combined exercise, but the results of different studies vary.

Myofascial relaxation therapy is a new therapeutic technology in development and is attracting more and more attention from professionals. In order to compare the effectiveness of myofascial relaxation therapy and traditional manipulation in patients with occupational neck pain, the related research was designed by Rodríguez-Fuentes from the University of Vigo, Spain, and the results were published in Am J Phys Med Rehabil. In the July 2016 issue of the journal.

This study was a randomized, single-blind, parallel study. The investigators included 59 subjects with occupational neck pain due to occupation and randomly divided them into two groups. Group I subjects received traditional manipulation, and group II subjects received Myofascial relaxation treatment. The evaluation indicators for the subjects included the degree of neck pain, neck dysfunction, quality of life, cranial neck angle, and range of cervical vertebra activity.

The subject's treatment regimen was based on treatment guidelines for mechanical neck pain, and both subjects received infrared hyperthermia and transcutaneous electrical stimulation in addition to myofascial relaxation therapy or traditional manipulation.

Both traditional manipulation and myofascial relaxation treatment took 15 minutes. Traditional manipulation includes anterior and lateral cervical motion, muscle energy techniques including lateral cervical vertebrae, neuromuscular techniques for C1-C2 rotation, inhibitory occipital traction techniques, and cervical traction (upper and oblique oblique muscles) Relaxation of the gonastus and sternocleidomast muscle after static contraction).

Myofascial relaxation treatment includes relaxation of the skull base (adjustment of the relationship between the big rectus and the dura mater after the head), overall relaxation of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, relaxation of the supraspinous and sublingual muscles, and posterior lingual muscles. Release of the membrane. After 5 courses of treatment, the two groups of subjects were significantly improved from the evaluation indicators. Comparing the results of the two groups of subjects, the investigators found that subjects receiving myofascial relaxation treatment had a cranial neck angle, a right/left side bend, a right/left rotation angle, and a quality of life. The improvement is better than subjects receiving traditional manipulation.

The results of this study indicate that in patients with mechanical neck pain caused by occupation, the application of myofascial relaxation treatment can better correct the position of the head and restore the activity of cervical scoliosis and rotation compared with traditional manual treatment. And better improve the quality of life of patients.
