D-EYE is an Italian company dedicated to providing affordable public health screening systems. On Wednesday, D-EYE announced that it is preparing to launch an iPhone-based retinal imaging accessory of the same name.

Designed for professional medical professionals, the D-EYE accessory turns the iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 into a portable "eye lens" that scans the base of the eye or the inner wall of the eye.

This accessory makes use of the iPhone's camera, image processing and communication functions, so it can be involved in medical clinical scanning at a lower cost.

“We are very happy to help millions of people, including many people in areas with poor medical services, to help them get proper eye care with our cheap retinal scanning capabilities.” D-EYE CEO Richard Sill said, "D-EYE's application in telemedicine will break the traditional time and space boundaries, allowing experts around the world to help diagnose and treat. For areas with poor medical conditions, it is impossible to travel far. For the patient, this is simply a gospel."

D-EYE has a 20 degree viewing angle to observe the patient's optic nerve, retina and other eye tissues. Moreover, because the device relies on the iPhone's LED as a light source, it does not require additional power, making it an ideal portable diagnostic device.

With the ability to capture images and capture video, D-EYE can be used to check for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, vascular malformations, major bleeding, and other conditions. This accessory is registered with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Standards Council (CEN).

In addition, D-EYE is also preparing to launch ImageVault, a cloud service platform that complies with the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). The platform is expected to be available later this year and its subscription service will provide the usual offline data storage capabilities. It also allows users to share images with other medical staff to receive telemedicine services.

D-EYE accessories are available for iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 as well as certain selected Android phones. The accessory is now available for sale through D-EYE's website for $445.
