Free radical aging theory is overthrown

The researchers found that free radicals can induce apoptosis -- also known as "programmed cell death." This death refers to the orderly death of cells that are controlled by genes to maintain homeostasis. Unlike cell necrosis, apoptosis is not a passive process, but an active process. It is a death process that is actively sought to better adapt to the living environment.

The team found that when free radicals stimulate apoptosis in some way, the resistance of the cells increases, which means that their life cycle is prolonged.

Hekimi further explained the group's findings: "People believe that free radicals are destructive and can cause aging, but this so-called 'free radical aging theory' is not correct. We have shown that the number of free radicals increases during aging Because they are actually fighting – not promoting aging, which overturns the theory of free radical aging. In fact, in our model organisms, we can increase the number of free radicals, giving them a longer life.”

Hekimi added that the molecular mechanisms by which free radicals increase cell life provide solid evidence that they are positive signaling molecules.

In addition, he pointed out that the results of this study imply that the apoptotic signal may trigger the process of “alleviating aging”.

"The mechanism of apoptosis has been widely studied. Based on its medical importance in immunity and cancer, many existing pharmacological tools are capable of manipulating apoptotic signals," Hekimi added. "But that doesn't mean it's an easy task."

He said that this process is very important in neurodegenerative diseases. In the brain, apoptotic signals may focus on enhancing the resistance of damaged cells, rather than destroying them, because replacing dead cells is more difficult than replacing other types of cells due to the complexity of the connection.
