MIT: Helping organ transplants, new technologies reviving the heart of death
Release date: 2015-09-14 According to the MIT Technology Review website, transplant surgeons are beginning to use a device that "resurrects" the heart; this device can extend the heart's in vitro time, causing the heart of some people who are not eligible for donation to recover. In the United States, there are approximately 2,400 heart transplants per year, and this data has not changed much in the past 20 years. Usually, heart transplants rely only on donors who are brain-dead but healthy. However, in at least 15 cases, surgeons in the UK and Australia say they have successfully transplanted the “resurrection†of the dead patient with an organ care system. The device was developed by TransMedics, a Massachusetts-based company, for $250,000. It can increase the number of donated hearts by 15%-30%. Not long ago, the company received $20 million in investment in a new round of financing. Earlier this year, St. Vincent's surgeons described three related cases in The Lancet. After the donor's heart stopped, they waited for 2 minutes and then took off the heart. However, within 20 minutes, they connected the heart to the TransMedics system; in an oxygen-containing and electrolyte environment, the heart regained its beating. Stephen Large, a surgeon at Papworth Hospital in London, said: "The equipment is vital. The heart of the device has gained the necessary blood input to restore energy." Papworth Hospital has used the system to participate in 8 heart transplants. Usually, transplant surgeons divide death into two major categories: brain death, heart or blood flow stop. The latter is called "the death of the circulatory system." Surgeons often rely on donors who die from brain. Their heart can cool in the body, then stop beating, take it off and transport it to the nearby 4 °C environment. The low temperature environment reduces the metabolic rate of the heart by about 90%, and it takes time for the donors. Almost all organ transplants are preserved in this way. Surgeons have found that the heart that naturally stops beating usually does not regain its beating or can't supply blood; therefore, they begin to rely entirely on brain death donors. However, the insufficient number of brain death donors has been a problem. "If you can take advantage of the heart of a donor who died in the upper circulatory system, it will increase the supply of nearly one-third of the UK's transplants," said Stephen Large, a surgeon at Papworth Hospital. In seven of the eight surgical procedures described above, Stephen Large's team returned to the heart in a dead patient's body. After the circulatory system stopped, his team waited for 5 minutes to quickly restore the blood supply to the brain and “restart†the donor's heart without removing the heart. After observing the heart beating in the donor, they took the heart off and placed it in the Transmedics device and shipped it to the donor. Stephen Large said: "So far, all 8 transplants have been successful."
