ResMed releases continuous airway pressure mask app myAir to track sleep apnea syndrome treatment

Release date: 2016-08-22

People wearing a continuous pressurized airway mask (CPAP) can use masks to keep them breathing and regular breathing during sleep. Equipment companies have introduced a companion app to support device users and improve compliance. ResMed's app is called myAir, CPAP users can track their treatment through the iOS app, and they can also access their daily sleep patterns and coaching skills through the app.
The app provides content-based coaching to learn how to improve their treatment through videos, emails, and encouragement. Users can wear the CPAP mask at night, and they will get myAir points when they log in the app the next morning, with scores ranging from 1 to 100, depending on the different elements of their treatment, such as the time they spend CPAP sleep, their apnea every hour. The number of times, as well as the quality of the CPAP mask.
Jeremy Maleca, senior product director at ResMed, said patients can dig and find ways to improve their scores based on the app and find reasons such as utilization, treatment efficiency and mask leaks. Mask leaks are really a challenge for patients, not only disturbing people, but also affecting the treatment effect.
RedMed released the CPAP peripheral air solution in 2014. Devices include AirSense and AirCurve, which contain mobile phone chips that store and transmit data. The project was originally launched on its website shortly after the launch of the device in 2014. The company not only works with core customers, but also has established cooperation with doctors. ResMed has a dedicated team and project ResMed data exchange integrated with EHR.
A retrospective study of apps by ResMed showed that CPAP compliance was 60%, but compliance with myAir increased to 84%, thanks to the patient feedback loop of the connected device.
Maleca said that the myAir score is a key factor in benefiting patients, while giving patients a sense of pleasure. This is both an educational tool and a means of competition. The company has found that some people even post their scores on social media.
ResMed has expired software applications on all airway devices while establishing a patient management platform and a repository of information available to patients. Currently iOS apps are only available in the US, but in the near future the company will release software to 20 countries on the mobile feedback website.
Maleca said that despite competition in this area, ResMed has been working hard to let users know the value of stable nighttime sleep. According to the company, 30% of the population have sleep-disordered breathing.
