Scientists first discovered that fat cells actually exercise to heal wounds

Release date: 2018-05-24

In many people's minds, fat is not a good thing. Its constant accumulation will lead to our body shape, metabolic disorders, and even disease. But recently, "Developmental Cell" under the "Cell" publishing house published a study of subversive three-views - fat cells that should be quietly still, will take the initiative to help cure the wound! The study also received a special report from the official website of Science.

In the study, scientists from the UK initially wanted to understand the immune response during the callus. They used a laser to cut a small hole in the fly of the fruit fly, and then wanted to see which cells would participate in the repair of the wound.

Unexpectedly, under the microscope, immune blood cells (hemocytes) in Drosophila took the lead in responding to the wound. Those who walked in the body once they found the wound, they would go to the emergency like a firefighter.

But the researchers also found some strange phenomena - in the observation, they found some huge shadows in the field of vision, the shape looks like fat cells. "I wonder if these shadows are fat cells," Dr. Anna Franz, the lead author of the study, said: "But theoretically fat cells should not move, they are not moving cells."

But follow-up studies have confirmed that these shadows are fat cells!

Will it be the pressure changes caused by these wounds, sucking fat cells? The researchers quickly ruled out this possibility. They use genetically engineered techniques to inactivate proteins responsible for traction and contraction in fat cells. A simple treatment makes fat cells lose their ability to exercise. This result also clearly shows that fat cells are consciously taking the initiative to go to the wound!

How do fat cells sense the wound? This issue is still a mystery to this day. But we know that at the wound, fat cells use their huge body shape to plug the mouth like a stopper until the wound heals.

The researchers pointed out that this study first discovered the motility of fat cells. And unlike the conventional way of cell movement, these fat cells are "swim" through their own distortions. These findings suggest that cells in the body can move without adhesion and are important for understanding the migration of cells in the body.

Next, the researchers plan to see if this phenomenon also exists in vertebrates. This team has overturned our understanding of fat cells. Will they reveal a whole new aspect of fat cells in higher animals? We look forward to the results of future research.
