Igus's new modular motion concept makes automation simple

Robolink Apiro enables a variety of sports to be implemented quickly and cost effectively

As the automation of the production process continues to increase, the competitive pressures faced by companies both locally and globally are increasing. To make the automation process more cost-effective and personal, igus has developed low-cost solutions using high-performance plastics, such as the new modular motion system robolink Apiro. The system provides design engineers with three lubrication-free worm gears for standard motion, reverse motion and linear motion. For users, from simple linear robots to complex humanoid and animal-shaped bionic robots, almost all can be achieved with the robolink Apiro modular motion system. This system has been exhibited at the Hannover Messe.

The easy and cost-effective implementation of a personalized, automated solution is the mission of igus' new modular motion system, robolink Apiro. As its name implies: Apiro means "infinite" in Greek. The development of this system focuses on decoupling the motor and gearbox and introducing a new worm gear for six-axis motion, such as the formation of multi-joint robots. Four different sizes of gearboxes are available in linear motion, reverse motion and traditional robolink worm gears, while the outstanding modularity allows the user to combine them as needed. With the new modular system, even complex movements can be achieved, such as cost-effective individual SCARA robots and linear robots, slag pickers for removing products from injection molding machines, as well as transport and handling systems, and humanoid robots. An animal-shaped robot that can move like a spider. This new robolink series is also suitable for training, development and research applications because it can be easily and quickly set up to perform different types of motion.

Modular system and versatile profiles for more flexible design

The new Apiro series of worm gears use high performance wear resistant engineering plastics with solid lubricants. This engineering plastic has high corrosion resistance and chemical resistance, so the worm wheel not only has high stability, long service life, but also light weight and maintenance-free. The joints in the Apiro modular system are joined together by aluminium versatile profiles. This allows the drive shaft to be inserted through the hollow position of the aluminum profile so that a reverse worm gear can be used. The gearbox drives the aluminum profile to rotate, making it ideal for robotic and rotary applications. By installing a new worm gear for linear motion, the aluminium profile can also be moved linearly or the worm gear can be run on a straight profile. Moreover, the clearance of the worm wheel is small. In addition, the versatile profile can be used to connect different types of gearboxes in the robolink Apiro range, or to place multiple Apiro joints side by side for parallel joints. The combination of multi-functional profiles and Apiro joints is varied and is not limited to the above examples, so automation can be automated for completely different applications.

Pre-production and off-the-shelf of modular systems

Since the Hannover Messe, igus is looking for testers to perform free sample tests to determine the practical operability of various sports types to further optimize the new concept of robolink Apiro. After thorough testing, igus plans to introduce robolink Apiro as a mass production solution for a wide range of markets. In addition, using the configurator to simulate different types of motion is also being planned.
