Xinhua News Agency, Wuhan, December 6 (Reporter Li Wei) Professor Song Baoliang from the School of Life Sciences of Wuhan University has discovered a potent compound that promotes the degradation of cholesterol synthesis rate, which lowers cholesterol levels. The international authoritative journal Nature Communications recently published this latest research online.

Long-term high levels of cholesterol in the blood can cause atherosclerosis, which can lead to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Statins are competitive inhibitors of rate-limiting enzymes in the cholesterol synthesis pathway. They are the main clinical cholesterol-lowering drugs and are widely used in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, statins increase side effects after treatment.

Through a series of compound design, optimization, and activity analysis, the researchers found that this compound reduces cholesterol levels and reduces the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in a mouse model of hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis. When this compound is combined with a statin, it can further lower cholesterol levels and reduce the formation of atherosclerotic plaque.

The results of this study indicate that the induction of a compound that promotes the rate-limiting enzymes of cholesterol synthesis is a new strategy for cholesterol lowering, especially in combination with statins, which has broad application prospects in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Currently, screening systems and compounds related to this study have been patented.
